On a fixed page size each image is scaled to fit inside the margins while keeping its proportions, so nothing is stretched or cropped — a photo whose shape does not match the page leaves space at two edges rather than distorting. "Fit page to image" takes the opposite approach and sizes each page to its picture, which is usually what you want for receipts and screenshots that would otherwise float in the middle of an A4 sheet.
An image that looks small in the result is almost always a resolution question rather than a bug. A PDF page is measured in points, and an image is placed at a size, not at its pixel count; a 400-pixel-wide screenshot spread across an A4 page is simply being enlarged. Photographing a document straight on, in even light, and cropping to the edges of the paper does more for legibility than any setting here.
Common questions
- Why does my image look small or low quality in the PDF?
- Because pixels and page size are different measures. The image is scaled to fit the page you chose, so a small screenshot placed on A4 is enlarged and looks soft, while a large photo is reduced and looks sharp. Choosing "fit page to image" sizes the page to the picture instead, which avoids enlarging anything.
- Which image formats can I use?
- JPG, PNG and WebP. Photographs are usually JPG, screenshots and exports are usually PNG, and images saved from websites are increasingly WebP. If you have HEIC files from an iPhone, convert them to JPG first with our image converter, then bring them here.
- Can I control the order of the pages?
- Yes. The list order is the page order, and you can drag images into position or move them with the arrow controls, which also work with a keyboard. Arranging before you save is easier than reordering the PDF afterwards, though our organise tool can do that too.
- Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
- No. The images are read from your device into the browser tab, assembled into a PDF there, and handed back to you as a download. Nothing is transmitted, which matters here more than in most places: photographs of documents tend to contain exactly the personal information you would least like on somebody else's server.
